Has online shopping taken off?

Almost all the economically active online community of South Africa has shopped online, the average frequency being 1 to 2 times a month.

1 in 10 shop online on a weekly basis and 5 in 10 at least once a month. The lion's share of buying is still happening in-store, but online shopping behaviour is becoming a more common place. How this behaviour changes will be seen as 2022 progresses.

The key consideration amongst those who shop online at least once a month is the cost of delivery. The question arises, is the cost of delivery higher than the cost of time, effort or transport needed to buy in-store? In keeping with this observation, it can be noted that location is the key driver when it comes to in-store shopping.

Which categories are driving online shopping behaviour? The top 3 categories are electronics, clothes & shoes, and lastly groceries.
